About this deal

Upton Country Park– Upton Country Park can be found just off the main road to Poole (A350). With excellent children’s playground equipment and a Georgian mansion and walled garden set within 160 acres of parkland, gardens, woodland and shoreline there is plenty to explore. Entry is free☕ 🚻(30 minutes) For certain developments a Design and Access Statement should be submitted. This is a report used by the local planning authority and others to help understand the development proposal, why it is as it is, and how it has evolved. The length and level of detail in a Design and Access Statement will vary according to the scale of the proposal and the sensitivity of its location. Further information on the purpose and content of Design and Access Statements and when they are required can be found in the Design SPD. KEY EVIDENCE

The surrounding areas of calcareous grassland support many species of butterfly and wild flowers including clustered bellflower and autumn gentian. Colonies of the adonis blue butterfly can be found on the steep south facing grassland slopes. Directions You can also access Durlston Country Park via the South West Coast Path – both from Swanage, over the Downs, and from the west from other nearby beauty spots such as Dancing Ledge. By bus In recent decades this spectacular heathland has more than doubled in size. Former dairy fields to the south have been in restoration since the 1980s, and are now diverse acid grasslands important for plants and in particular waxcap fungi. Both of these walks are moderate in terms of difficulty, terrain and fitness levels – perhaps you could start at Durlston’s café to fuel up for the day. The plots come without planning permission, but Oliver suggests that if the winning bidders are “realistic and sympathetic” in their proposals, the local councils would be open to considering them. Kingston Lacy House and Gardens– Located near Wimborne, Kingston Lacy’s impressive Venetian-style house, gardens and parkland makes for a full and varied day out. Interestingly, you can see the keys to Corfe Castle, which are on display here. Kingston Lacy is now a National Trust property: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kingston-lacy📞01202 883402☕ 🚻(40 – 45 minutes) The estate runs from the chalk ridge, northward through farmland, forest, dry and wet heath, and ultimately to the saltmarshes on the south side of Poole Harbour. Durlston is a great start-point for a variety of walks that take you out of the park and onto the South West Coast Path.

Maiden Newton is on the route of the Wessex Ridgeway trail. It is also on Route 26 of Sustrans National Cycle Network. The Victorian faux castle is also home to the park’s visitor centre, gift shop and café and hosts various events throughout the year. Entrance to Durlston Castle The stones are set within a wider landscape of dry valleys and slopes of upper chalk that include extensive areas of fine calcareous grassland that is rich in butterflies and wild flowers. A lovely place to sit for lunch. This walk is basically a ‘figure of eight’ on the map, and this gate and bench mark the centre; we will return here later. There are three main walks to choose from in Durlston: the Wildlife Trail, the Clifftop Trail and the Woodland Trail, all of which start at, or near to, the car park and visitor centre.Other butterflies found on the reserve during the summer include the rare Adonis blue, the green hairstreak, common blue, gatekeeper, grizzled skipper and dingy skipper.

A social media post from the festival read: “We want to thank the casts and crews of the nine visiting groups, our adjudicator Paul Brennan, everyone who minded groups, booking office, box office, lighting, sound all who helped in the kitchen our supporters Kepak, Longford County Council, Michael and Josephine Cooney and John Nally Circle K. It is a short drive from the centre of town, or you can also walk up the hill – simply follow the signs to the park.

Foot ferries regularly run from Poole Quay and Sandbanks jetty between mid-March and mid-November. More information: Greenslade Pleasure Boats or Brownsea Island Ferries. Within the reserve, well preserved medieval field patterns can be seen on some of the steep sides of the dry valleys and slopes of upper chalk. Don’t enter the mire (wet ground) under any circumstances because it’s dangerous and floating vegetation can give way. Management: Arne Reedbeds NNR is owned by Natural England and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds ( RSPB). Features of interest A man who struggles to open his front door as a result of traffic accidents has called for urgent change after 10 accidents were seen in 13 weeks.
