The aim of the pirates is to loot and escape with a number of treasures chests from the burning ship before all pirates are either killed, overwhelmed, cut off and trapped on the ship by the fire, the gold is destroyed, or the ship explodes. It’s a shame that I didn’t have the opportunity to enjoy Dead Men Tell No Tales when it first released seven years ago, but it’s better late than never. Dead Men Tell No Tales – Skelit’s Revenge (DMTNT) is a co-operative pirate adventure where up to five players take the roles of scurvy sea pirates attempting to loot the ghost ship, The Skelit’s Revenge, its ghostly owner Captain Fromm and his skeleton crew. Captain Fromm and his skeleton crew have amassed a massive treasure, and now is your chance to board and plunder it all! We did find that we overlooked a few of the small rules from time to time when we first added the expansion as there was a lot to remember, but this wasn’t a huge game changer and as it’s a co-op game it doesn’t affect the balance too much.

The Kraken is one of those expansions that once you start playing with it, you won’t want to play the base game without it! Although it doesn’t state this to be a solo game, the game can be easily adapted by the solo gamer simply playing the role of more than one pirate.With all those demands on a player’s actions, it really made me enjoy how there are quite a few ways to lose.

I’ve lost Dead Men Tell No Tales in a couple of different ways, this game can really keep you on your toes, especially at the harder levels. Setup – The setup sees each player given a pirate character card with a special ability, one item giving players a second special ability, five action tokens and a player board.If enough treasure tokens have been destroyed (due to room explosions) that you can’t meet the game’s goal. I tend to prefer the game with 3 players as I feel like I have a bit more control over the board and the downtime is a bit less. Despite its visual appearance, Dead Men Tell No Tales’ fire die adds a puzzle element to the experience.

Both games feature a spreading threat that needs to kept under a certain value or risk explosive growth.Despite its complexity, the round structure is easy to understand and all the pieces fall into place after the first couple of rounds, making it easy for new players the get comfortable with their first game. On the good side, each player got a very useful player aid, but there just wasn't enough usability to help this game excel.
