About this deal

The tongue is now gusseted as Joost mentioned above and I think in this case, it probably helps to provide a little bit more mid-foot support. If you liked (or loved) the Nike Pegasus Turbo, I would consider trying the New Balance FuelCell Rebel 2 because it is fairly similar.

While best at fast paces during mid-distances or speed intervals, the Rebel v3 runs well for me for slow, easy days too.

The toe box volume is a little lower and it is marginally shorter than v2 though this does not really bother me. I found that the 6mm drop combined with the rocker geometry made it really easy to get up onto my toes and pick up the pace. If you require more support underfoot but still want ultimate New Balance comfort, check out the New Balance Fresh Foam More v3 or New Balance Fresh Foam 1080 v11.

I don’t have wide feet, but I do have low arches, so when the midfoot volume goes down, I notice it very quickly as a wider spacing between eyelets at midfoot and often a disproportionately higher lace tension at midfoot vs the forefoot and heel area. The shoe is a lightweight performance trainer that packs in a lot of plush cushioning and responsiveness into the same package. He has summited peaks throughout the Americas, trekked through Africa, and tested his endurance in 24-hour trail races as well as 6 marathons. A really soft, squishy base feels like walking on clouds, but feels snappy and fun once you start to move.

How does the second edition of the Rebel compare to its competitors in the heated market for fast trainers? On an A/B test, with my “newer” Rebel v2 at 75 miles and the Rebel v3 at 92 miles, the Rebel v2 feels slightly softer, but I think that might be from the outsole. There is a toe guard present, but it is very minimal and provides just enough to reinforcement to keep the shape of the shoe without putting any excessive pressure anywhere. For me, on the run, the difference is not notable, but I think it creates a slightly friendlier ride and increases versatility without a notable increase in weight. Version 2 is not as snappy-feeling as version 1 because the TPU plate has been removed but the ride now feels more natural and relaxed.

Some speedy shoes feel like they’re designed to influence my stride to make me run more on my mid or forefoot. When you first put on the Rebel and walk around in it, you might get the feeling you’re going to bottom out, because of the softness of the FuelCell foam, but on the run, it is nimble, snappy and still well cushioned enough.
